Hotels in Kenosha

It has been brought to my attention that folks coming from out of town to attend the festival may need a hotel. Below is a list of hotels in the Kenosha area - click on the hotel name to link to their site. 


The Best Western Harborside is approximately one minute from the Kenosha Public Museum, 5 minutes from Carthage College and 10 minutes from U of W Parkside.


All other hotels are out by I 94 and are 15-20 minutes from the events.

Coming In September - Mark Your Calendars!

Come and join us for the Kenosha Festival of Cartooning!


Running for three days and nights from Wednesday, September 14 through Friday, September 16, the Festival will take place at Carthage College, The Kenosha Public Museum, and the University of Wisconsin at Parkside and will feature the H.F. Johnson Gallery of Art exhibit "One Fine Sunday in The Funny Pages" as well as presentations by an international roster of cartoonists.


Cartoonists appearing at the festival will be:


Tom Richmond - Artist and illustrator for MAD magazine and the current President of the National Cartoonist Society


John Hambrock - "The Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee"


Sandra Bell Lundy - "Between Friends"


Paul Gilligan - "Pooch Cafe"


Scott Stantis - "Prickly City" and also the staff Editorial Cartoonist for the Chicago Tribune


Michael Jantze - "The Norm" and also head of Jantze Animation Studios.


And Special Guest John Read - Publisher of "Stay Tooned" and creator of "One Fine Sunday in the Funny Pages".


The guests will be lecturing to classes at both Carthage and Parkside and will also be featured in a series of presentations open to the general public. These presentations will be on both campuses as well as at the Kenosha Public Museum.


Following is a partial schedule of the public events - the full schedule will be posted as soon as it is available:


Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the University of Wisconsin Parkside: Panel Discussion "Working in Syndication". Panel members: Scott Stantis, Sandra Bell Lundy, Paul Gilligan, and John Hambrock. 


This discussion will be followed by Q & A and a meet and greet reception with the artists. This event is free and open to the public.


Wednesday evening at 7:00 at the Kenosha Public Museum: Behind the Scenes of "Pooch Cafe" with Paul Gilligan followed by Behind the Scenes of "Edison Lee" with John Hambrock. This event is free and open to the public.


Thursday morning from 8:00-9:00: Interview of all guest artists by Greg Berg of WGTD


Thursday afternoon/evening from 4:30-7:30 at the H.F Johnson Gallery of Art: Gala opening reception for "One Fine Sunday in the Funny Pages". During this time the visiting artists will be present, sketching and signing autographs. Brought to Carthage College by Gallery Director Diane Levesque, "One Fine Sunday" is the brainchild of John Read, publisher of "Stay Tooned" magazine. On Display from September 13-November 5, 2011, the show gathers the original artwork of more than 130 nationally syndicated comic strips, all published in newspapers across America on Sunday, April 11 2010. John Read will also be present at the gallery opening. The exhibit and opening reception are free and open to the public.




Friday afternoon at 1:00 in the New Student Center Auditorium: Panel Discussion "Marketing Yourself As An Artist In The Digital Age". Panel Members: Tom Richmond, John Hambrock, Tom Bancroft, Scott Stantis, Sandra Bell Lundy and  Paul Gilligan. This event is free and open to the public.




Friday afternoon at 2:30 in the Student Center Auditorium at CarthageSandra Bell Lundy discusses her 20 year career in cartooning with special emphasis on the woman's voice on the comics page and the challenges of working in a male dominated field. Ms. Lundy's presentation will also touch on some her more poignant storylines concerning infertility and adoption and domestic violence.


Friday afternoon at 4:00 in the Student Center Auditorium at Carthage: Presentation for Constitution Day by Editorial Cartoonist Scott StantisThis event is free and open to the public.


The Festival will conclude Friday with a presentation at 7:00 pm at the Kenosha Public Museum by Tom Richmond. Titled "Cartooning For The Troops", Mr. Richmond's talk details his travels with the USO visiting soldiers in Germany, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Iraq. This event is free and open to the public.


Additional presentations are still in the planning stage. A full schedule of the festival will be available by August 30th.
